Billy Malak-Guru-Engineer in Chief
Billy Malak is a junior currently studying Aerospace Engineering at University of Illinois. Along with his interest in 3D printing, Billy also enjoys sharing his knowledge with the customers and visitors of the MakerLab in workshops and open hours. He began as a volunteer in the Lab in Fall of 2015, and was hired on as a staff member in the Spring of 2016. Billy hopes to continue to foster curiosity in the industry of 3D printing and guide those who are interested to pursue unique design ideas. He also loves fixing things and thus we call him, Engineer-in-Chief. Besides university classes and being a part of the MakerLab staff, Billy is also a member of the Marching Illini and Illini athletic bands. He continues to experiment with how 3D printed products can apply to the field of music. Along with his work in the Makerlab, he also researches with the Aerospace department on campus.
Jim Scharfenberg-Guru-Minecraft in chief
Jim Scharfenberg is a junior in aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been a MakerLab Guru since Spring 2016. He is our single biggest customer as he designs and prints huge parts when he replicates things from all the games he plays. He also launched our minecraft workshops and conducts them on many weekends with young kids. Jim is part of the Marching Illini as a mellophone player and also does research for NASA, through UIUC, looking at ice buildup on wings. He applies 3D printing to all of these activities and more, having printed instrument parts, prototypes of iced wings, and all manner of video game props.
Kyle Teschendorf-guru-design expert
Kyle Teschendorf is a junior studying mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Kyle first became active at the MakerLab in the Fall of 2014 before becoming a Lab Guru in the Spring of 2016. He has a keen interest for innovation and product design, and he especially enjoys 3D printing for its use in rapid prototyping. He considers himself a hobbyist and often designs and prints in his free time, but he also enjoys hiking and watching hockey.
Scott Zelman-guru-training and development
Scott Zelman is a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studies aerospace engineering. He joined the Illinois MakerLab team as a Guru in May 2015 and is interested in applying additive manufacturing to improve industrial design and tooling processes. In summer 2016, Scott had the opportunity to do an internship at Lockheed Martin working in their industrial 3D printing facility and uses the skills he developed at LM in the MakerLab. He is now helping all volunteers and new guru’s get trained and deliver workshops. Aside from his role at the MakerLab, Scott also does undergraduate research with the Bretl Research Group in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UIUC and was a founding member of the Satellite Development Organization within the Aerospace Engineering Department, an endeavor to design, build, and launch custom CubeSat satellites.

Erin McKee is a junior majoring in Finance and International Business, with minors in Spanish and the Hoeft Technology and Management Program. She started volunteering in Fall 2016 and is thrilled to be part of the guru team this semester! She loves working at the MakerLab because she sees it as the place where business, engineering, and design intersect. She also manages the corporate and RSO outreach at the lab. Erin will be spending this summer as a Finance Intern at AbbVie, a biopharmaceuticals research and development company. When she’s not at the MakerLab she spends her time with Enactus, a social entrepreneurship organization, and running all over campus with the Illinois Track Club.
Joshua Mathew-guru-volunteer team leader
Joshua Mathew is a senior in the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, double majoring in Information Systems & Information Technology and Business Process Management. He first got involved with the MakerLab in Spring 2016 as its social media manager and primary volunteer. Now, he is happy to be a part of the MakerLab Guru team and help manage all the volunteers at the lab! Aside from the MakerLab, he currently serves as a Leadership Paraprofessional at the Illinois Leadership Center and was a former consultant for Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations and Global Business Brigades.
William Jones is a freshman at Illinois in the Division of General Studies. He plans to transfer into Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering in the coming year. Will volunteered at the MakerLab during his first semester at the University, and is now a Lab Guru. He enjoys all aspects of 3D printing and intends to work in rapid prototyping after graduating from Illinois. Will often prints parts for his cameras, designing custom mounts that fit his needs. In his free time, Will loves to create. He has his own Etsy shop where he sells custom light fixtures, and he enjoys being a maker in his time outside of class.
Dashiell (Dash) Kosaka is a sophomore studying computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a new guru for the Spring 2017 semester at MakerLab after starting as a volunteer in Spring 2016. He was introduced to MakerLab by a friend and liked it because of the connection to his field and the general environment. Working and experimenting with the machines is just one of his hobbies. Some of the other things he likes to do includes learning about the software and special devices in the lab.
Rachel Kuehr- Web Content Creator
Rachel is a freshman studying Business, with an interest in Supply Chain Management and Information Systems & Information Technology. She started volunteering in Fall 2016. Rachel loves learning about 3D printing and how it can be used in today’s society. As the web content creator, Rachel gets to share her passion for 3D printing with the rest of the world! Aside from the MakerLab, Rachel spends her time working on her professional skills with the Society of Women in Business.
Clark Csiki is a junior majoring in Industrial Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been with the Makerlab Guru team since Fall 2016. He is involved with the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and CUBE Consulting, a student run consulting firm. He has previously interned with SIMnext, a company at the forefront of medical design, and is currently an Experience Design Intern with the AARP Tech Nest at Research Park. He has a passion for the design process, which was what brought him to the Makerlab.
Yazmine Carbajal is a junior majoring in Industrial Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked with the MakerLab since Fall 2016. She previously worked with GlucoSentient to design a medical device that monitors glucose levels Yazmine hopes to design medical devices in the future due to her passion for transplant patients. Yazmine has also done graphic design for Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), Champaign-Urbana Business and Engineering Consulting (CUBE), and Alpha Rho Chi Professional Co-ed Fraternity. In the future Yazmine hopes to design medical devices due to her passion to further develop products in the medical field.
