3D Printing Workshops
Check out and sign up for our workshops designed to teach students, staff, faculty and community members how to design, scan, and print 3D objects. Each workshop is 90 minutes in length and held at the Illinois MakerLab. Additionally, we offer a Digital Maker Certificate and a Digital Maker Badge for completion of our workshops (see details below).

Workshops We Offer
- Basic 3D Printing (age 15+)
- 3D Design – Tinkercad (age 15+)
- 3D Design – Autodesk Fusion 360(age 15+)
- 3D Scanning (age 15+)
- (New) Minecraft+ 3d Printing (ages 10-18)
These workshops are hands-on and will provide you with a set of useful skills that you can immediately apply in a variety of different areas. The workshops start with the basics of 3D printing and go on to more advanced methods of 3D modeling and end with a workshop on 3D scanning. You can sign up for as many of these workshops as you’d like!
Each of our workshops is limited to 15 participants.

Digital Maker Certificate: A Digital Maker Certificate is a visible symbol of that you possess the knowledge and skills to design, scan, and print 3D objects. In addition, it certifies to others that you are well versed with cutting-edge 3D tools such as 3d printers/scanners, platforms such as Thingiverse.com , and software such as Tinkercad, and Autodesk Fusion 360. A growing number of firms are recognizing the revolutionary potential of 3D printers. Thus, those with 3D printing skills are in high demand! At a more personal level, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have the ability to turn your ideas into objects and your objects into ideas!
This certificate is given after completion of Basic 3D Printing, 3D Design with Tinkercad , 3D Design with Fusion 360, and 3D Scanning workshops.
Digital Maker Badge: This is a digital badge we offer that can proudly be displayed on your LinkedIn profile or other online portfolio . You are eligible for this badge once you earn a Digital Maker Certificate.
Additionally, we will also place your photo on our Wall of Makers (coming soon) area of our website.

No-Show Policy: Please note if you do not notify us at least 24 hours in advance that you have to miss a workshop and you do not show up for the workshop, you will be ineligible to complete the Digital Maker Certificate until the next semester.

This workshop is an introduction into the world of 3D printing. In this workshop our Gurus will provide a brief overview of the MakerLab and 3D printing. Different printing methodologies, as well as their benefits and limitations will also be covered during this session. This session will demonstrate how to operate a 3D printer and how to download, prepare, and print digital files from a digital library (Thingiverse). In addition, attendees will receive a brief demonstration about both 3D modeling and 3D scanning. One lucky participant in each class will have the opportunity to receive a free 3D portrait!
This workshop will demonstrate how to operate a basic 3D Design Software package (Tinkercad). Participants in this workshop will use this software to design a customized keychain that can be printed in our lab. The skills learned this workshop can be easily applied to create a wide variety of fun and useful 3D printable objects.
This workshop will teach you the basics of a more advanced 3D software package (Autodesk Fusion 360). This workshop will teach participants two important modeling skills (free-form modeling and parametric modeling). The skills learned this workshop can be easily applied to create advanced 3D printable objects, such as objects with unique shapes and movable parts.
The 3D scanning workshop will provide an overview of how 3D scanning works, the different scanners available in the lab and on campus and a demonstration of how to scan both people and objects. After completing this workshop, participants will be able to create their own 3D photocopies! Each participant gets their free head scan and print(a $15 value) as part of this final workshop and then a certificate.
If your kid loves Minecraft, this 3D printing workshop is for them. We will introduce your kids to modelling and 3D printing through building objects in Minecraft. Your kids will gain an understanding of 3D printing technology and take home their very own 3Dprinted creation after the completion of the workshop. The workshop briefly covers some advanced building techniques as well as the limitations of 3D printing minecraft structures. The workshop also covers the necessary tools to export portions of a minecraft world and how to get that file into a software (Cura) for slicing and 3d printing. They will also learn how to use 3dprinters and they can come back to do any other science or other fun projects . We are open during the week, and all students get very reasonable printing rates.
