Deadline Season: Architecture Models at the MakerLab
Every spring, the last two weeks of April look different at the MakerLab. Architecture juries land, and multi-part building models start moving through the queue in volume.
One Project, Three Print Strategies
A representative end-of-semester order came to us as a single model broken into three very different components, each printed with its own settings:
- Roof sections in black at 20% infill, for a bit more rigidity across broad spans
- A building mass in orange at 15% infill
- A landscape base at 15% infill
Varying infill by component is a deliberate trade. Denser parts are stronger but slower and heavier on material. When a deadline is fixed, deciding which pieces genuinely need the extra density is part of the design work.
Six Printers, One Deadline
To make the jury date, the pieces were distributed across six machines running in parallel rather than queued on one. Splitting a model across printers is one of the most effective things we do during crunch periods, and it is a good reason to bring architecture work to us early rather than the night before.
Why Architecture and 3D Printing Fit
Physical models remain central to architectural critique, and printing handles things that cutting and folding cannot: curved facades, complex roof geometry, terrain, and repeated structural elements at consistent scale. Multi-part models also let students revise a single component without rebuilding the entire thing.
