From Physical Sample to Printed Part: Custom Wheel Hub Caps

A walk-in client stopped by the lab and left behind a single wheel hub cap, with a simple request: four more of these, six inches across, in a chrome finish.

Starting From an Object

As with any order that arrives as a physical item rather than a file, the first job was modeling. Our team measured the sample and built a matching part, paying particular attention to the clip geometry, since a hub cap that does not retain properly is worse than no hub cap at all.

Test in PLA, Produce in ABS

Rather than commit four full production parts to an unproven model, we ran one test unit in PLA first. PLA prints fast, prints reliably, and costs little, which makes it ideal for checking fit before the real run.

The plan from there was to move to ABS for the production units. ABS handles heat and mechanical stress considerably better than PLA, which matters a great deal for a part that lives outdoors on a wheel and takes vibration, sun, and temperature swings.

The General Lesson

Choosing a material is really about asking what the part has to survive:

  • PLA for prototypes, display pieces, and indoor items
  • PETG for parts that need some toughness and moisture resistance
  • ABS for heat and impact
  • TPU and flexible filaments where the part needs to bend or grip
