From Screen to Print: Student Creates Daft Punk Helmet

When Amish Prasad walked into the MakerLab with plans to create a Daft Punk helmet, we knew it was going to be a fun project. The iconic helmets worn by the legendary electronic music duo have inspired countless fans—and now, thanks to 3D printing, building one is more accessible than ever.

The Build

Amish chose to print the helmet in white PLA with 5% infill, creating a lightweight base that could later be painted and customized. The full-scale helmet required our large-format printer, running for extended hours to complete the main shell.

Projects like this push the boundaries of what's possible with consumer-grade 3D printing. A helmet needs to be:

  • Large enough to fit comfortably
  • Structurally sound despite minimal infill
  • Smooth enough for finishing and painting

Cosplay and Making

The cosplay community has embraced 3D printing as an essential tool. What once required expensive vacuum forming equipment or expert fabrication skills can now be achieved with a 3D printer and some patience. Props, armor pieces, and helmets that would have been impossible for individual makers are now within reach.

We love seeing these creative projects come through the lab. They remind us that making isn't just about solving practical problems—it's about bringing imagination to life.
