240 Parts in Five Colors: A Large Batch Print

Most of our orders are one or two objects. Occasionally a group needs a couple of hundred, and the job becomes less about design and more about logistics.

The Order

Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, came to us with a large run for a campus project: 240 pieces, produced as printed sheets grouped by color. The color list was orange, navy blue, red, white, and pink or purple depending on what we had in stock.

Batch Printing Is a Scheduling Problem

At this volume, the interesting questions are not about the model. They are:

  • How many parts fit per bed? Nesting pieces tightly cuts the number of runs dramatically.
  • How do we group by color? Every filament change costs time, so all of one color goes together.
  • Which printers stay free? A large batch cannot monopolize every machine, since walk-in orders keep arriving.
  • What is the filament stock? A 240 piece run can genuinely exhaust a spool of a less common color.

Why Student Organizations Use Us

For runs in the dozens or low hundreds, 3D printing beats both handmade and commercially manufactured options. There is no tooling cost, no minimum order, and color changes are free. For a student group working from an activity budget, that combination is hard to match anywhere else on campus.
