Guru Spotlight - Almasa Krvavac

The MakerLab Gurus are a really important part of the lab. They run the lab day to day by helping start prints, facilitating workshops, troubleshooting printers, and teaching new volunteer! Today, we will introduce you to one of our gurus, Almasa Krvavac!

Almasa is currently a junior at the Gies College of Business here at Illinois studying Accounting and Information Systems/Information Technology. She first joined the MakerLab as a volunteer in Spring 2017 and worked her way up to a guru! Almasa is also our digital marketing coordinator and as a result she oversees the volunteers who run our various social media accouts! Almasa’s favorite part about working in the lab is definitely the people. She loves talking to experienced makers and to new ones! Helping people learn has always been one of her strong suits and she is more than grateful that she is able to extend that through her position in the lab. Guru’s in the MakerLab are often times managing and working on various projects that aid the lab. This semester, Almasa is working on creating a sponsor wall for the lab! We have a bit of unused space on one of our walls and another Guru, William Jones, brought up the idea of 3D printing the logos of the MakerLab's sponsors (Proctor & Gamble, Caterpillar, Infosys, Intel, MakeShaper) to showcase the networks that 3D printing can provide. She loves working on this project as it has allowed her to learn a new modeling software, Fusion 360! And check it out! The sponsor wall is coming along great!

Illinois MakerLab Participates at National Manufacturing Day!

This past Friday, the Illinios MakerLab was proud to be a part of National Manufacturing Day! Manufacturing Day is a day for celebrating modern manufacturing and revolves around inspiring other people to get involved in manufacturing. On October 5th, there were more than 2,694 different events nationwide honoring manufacturing and the MakerLab was one of them! The Illinois MakerLab participated in Manufacturing Day to expose new makers to the magic of 3D printing. We had a lot of fun showing people around the lab and explaining all that the MakerLab has to offer for everyone! We hope to see some of them stop by again and try out 3D printing for themselves!

Volunteer Spotlight- Jean Pabon

The MakerLab volunteers are a really important part of the lab. They help day to day welcoming makers, assisting with workshops and fixing printers. Today, we will introduce you to one of our volunteers, Jean Pabon!

Jean is a junior here at Illinois studying Management in the Gies College of Business and has been an essential part of the MakerLab since he joined! Jean’s favorite part of the MakerLab is working with other people to help them better understand what the lab has to offer and what 3D printing is all about! The project Jean is most invested in goes hand in hand with his favorite part about the lab. Jean is the lead on our video creation. His responsibilities entail gathering different footage of what’s going on in the lab. From objects printing, to workshops, to finished prints, Jean is gathering it all to start making videos for our social media! In fact, Jean produced the video that we submitted for the InfyMakers and won! Below are some pictures that Jean plans on featuring in his next video! Jean loves sharing his passion for 3D printing as he thinks it’s great that the Illinois MakerLab is one of the few spots on campus that allows people to have access to such a unique technology. He knows that 3D printing is revolutionizing the world and with the MakerLab people can easily be a part of that revolution.

MakerLab Aids in Scientific Research

There are many types of people who come to the MakerLab. Some for fun, some for school and others for research! 3D printing is revolutionizing research by offering quick and easy ways to get prototypes. And this is what researchers from the Laboratory for Optical Physics and Engineering here at Illinois came to the MakerLab for. They were looking for a 3D printing facility that could quickly print them the prototype they needed. And the MakerLab was there to help them! Our Gurus were able to succesfully print all the parts needed for LOPE researcher’s prototype. Once assembled, their prototype served as a holding station for testing devices.

Illinois MakerLab Team Competes in National Make48 Competition

This year, the University of Illinois was one of the twelve schools invited to participate in Make48, an annual competition that invites teams of four individuals to participate in a weekend-long design competition. Participants must plan, prototype, and pitch a new idea, drawing inspiration from a given theme in just 48 hours! This year we were excited to send a team of 4 from the MakerLab: Yuxuan Tang, Dashiell Kosaka, Suixin Liu, and William Casey Jones. They got to travel to Baltimore, Maryland this past August to engage with makers from all around the country. And the best part? They were filmed lived as Make48 doubles as an educational tv series. So, our very own team will appear on season 3 which will air Fall 2019! Stay tuned and don’t watch our makers in action at Make48 next fall!

#WeTheRosies

At the beginning of the summer, the MakerLab was proud to be a part of the #WeTheRosies movement! Run by We The Builders, #WeTheRosies involved building a 6 foot tall Rosie the Riveter! With ALL 2,625 parts being 3D printed! Our very own director, Vishal Sachdev, attended the event and helped to put Rosie together. Check out the finished product!

We The Builders mission is to bring together and inspire makers around the nation. As a result, 3D printing labs around the nation participated in printing pieces for Rosie! With the MakerLab printing 10 pieces! Below are some of the parts we printed! Can you pick them out in the finished product?
