Students Photocopy Objects with their iPhones!

On Friday, April 5, nearly 20 University of Illinois students stopped by the MakerLab to learn how to photocopy objects with their iPhones. This session was taught by Katie Khau, a UI student in Art & Design and a MakerLab Trainer. Katie demonstrated how to photocopy objects using the new iPhone app, 123D Catch (www.123dapp.com/catch). As part of this demonstration, Katie printed out a small scale photocopy of a 3D printed replica of Rodin's "The Thinker" (www.thingiverse.com/thing:34343). She has also put up a tutorial, if you want to try this. If you have questions, please post on our Forums

In the coming months, we plan to offer more training sessions such as this. Our next session is a tutorial on Google Sketchup on Friday, April 19 from 12:00-1:00pm. To RSVP, email us at uimakerlab@illinois.edu or signup on facebook. Subscribe to our blog RSS feed to be the first to hear about events and other exciting news from MakerLab.

Scan and Print, Now in 3D at the Illinois MakerLab

2D scanning and printing is passe! Come visit the MakerLab on Friday April 5, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and learn how to scan your stuff and print it, all in 3D. Learn to scan in 3D using a camera or smart phone using Autodesk’s 123D Catch software. If you have an Iphone you can download the 123D Catch app straight to your phone from http://www.123dapp.com/catch and then visit the lab @103 Surveying Bldg. Sign up for the event on our Facebook page.

Lets learn together

The MakerLab is an experiment in bringing together a community of learners who are interested in learning by making. As we open our doors, there is a great opportunity to participate as a group, for a course on creative learning being offered by MIT, online at http://learn.media.mit.edu/index.html. This is a very popular course and current MIT students will be taking this course, along with us. We will get opportunities to learn from the works of Seymour Papert among others, and mostly from each other, and perhaps a lot more about 3D printing and digital making. This will be a live experiment for all of us to see whether an engaged and motivated community can learn effectively around an online course, while 'making' stuff, digital or physical.

When you sign up for the course, use the invite code 10807 , so that they assign all of us to the same group.  The signups close on Friday, 8th Feb, so you must signup immediately. The course will have live sessions on dates/times listed on the website( Mondays at 9:00 am, as per information available), but the sessions will be recorded. We plan to meet every Friday at noon, starting February 15th,  at the MakerLab, to discuss the weeks readings/projects/assignments.

So, go ahead and signup and remember to use the invite code 10807 and signup immediately.

Atoms to Bits and Back .... a Big Success

It was great to see the student/faculty interest in the lab, at the 3D printing event organized at BIF jointly with AIS. Over 30 students/faculty got themselves scanned using the Kinect and the prints will be made available soon. Some photos from the event are available on our facebook page.
